Essential Etiquette In Coffee Service

By Marcy Becker

There exist two different types of houston coffee service, the formal and the informal. Formal services will only be rendered after dinner or during formal ceremonies and events where guests have to be served in class. The informal services, however, will only be employed during informal celebrations and gatherings like luncheons or dinners. Regardless of what type will be practiced though, it is essential for both servers and hosts to practice the proper etiquette necessary.

Coffee is often served in different cup sizes. For espresso or strong coffee, small cups which are also known as the demitasse, shall be used. Usually, these will be served after formal dinners. Medium-sized cups or teacups are used during meals. Large cups, are often only used for informal family gatherings. They can also be used for breakfast though.

It is important for the drinks to be served on saucers. These saucers must also have spoons properly placed on the right side of cup handles. Usually, these will be served on trays together with a coffeepot, sugar with spoon and a pitcher containing cream.

Informal meals usually require early preparation of the coffee drinks. Hostesses may choose to set trays on a particular table which guests will have to approach themselves should they want to fix a drink after eating. Trays may also be set near the hostesses though so they can fix the guests drinks themselves. For such a setting, they will be the ones putting in the sugar and the cream into cups as requested. They can also opt to distribute all cups first and then have the sugar and the cream passed around for guests to see through the task by themselves.

At times, hostesses of informal meals choose to hire servers to assist both in preparing and serving the drinks. In such settings, hostesses will still be the ones to prepare the cups for the guests, taking into account cream and sugar preferences. The job of the servers will be to place the cups on the right side of the guests.

Servers may also serve guests individually, standing by the side with a tray and coffee pot. They will be the ones to stir in the cream and sugar upon request of the guests and then place the cups on the right side of plates. In cases where guests would want to mix their own cream and sugar, servers will be standing on the left side while holding at an appropriate height the tray with both cream and sugar.

If you will be holding a formal occasion though, you may put the servers in charge of the distribution and even the preparation of the drinks. Assign each of them a table to serve. They will have to bring along cups, cream and sugar while roaming around and inquiring whether or not guests would want coffee to be fixed for them.

You can have servers working together as well. One shall carry the tray with the sugar, cream and coffeepot. Another server will be assisting the first one by standing by and providing saucers and cups when in need.

For a Houston coffee service involving two servers, one server will be offering guests the cups. He will then mix in the cream and sugar. Right after serving the guest, the other server will then hand another saucer and cup to the first server for the next guest.
